How can I get my child back into a sleep routine before they go back to school?

It is likely that your child’s sleep routine will have changed during lockdown. Routines in general have had to change whilst you have had to juggle home schooling, work and family life.

Your child may also be feeling anxious about coronavirus, returning to school, exam results and spending time with people again. This will likely be affecting their sleep.

By helping your child get back to a sleep routine before they return to school, they will be more resilient to the changes that they are about to face.

Tips for establishing a sleep routine

  • Start a new routine gradually. Bring bedtime forward a little bit each night.
  • Wake your child up earlier in the morning.
  • Think about mealtimes and getting them in line with the school day hours.
  • Do activities during the day to use up energy.
  • Re-establish a proper bedtime routine, with some calming activities to help reduce back to school anxiety. Try this mindful moment activity.
  • Put parental controls on their phones and screens so that they start switching off earlier. Screen time just before bed leads to poorer quality sleep.
